“A woman’s skin mirrors her hormones, health, and life stages. Recognizing these changes enables us to nurture the skin rather than oppose it."
In a woman’s life, major hormonal milestones most visibly influence skin: pregnancy/postpartum and perimenopause/menopause. Though these stages may be decades apart, both feature profound hormonal shifts that drive inflammation, collagen synthesis, hydration, circulation, and barrier function.
Many women perceive sudden or unexplained skin changes that are actually foreseeable physiological effects of these hormonal transitions. Knowing the science behind them enables a strategic, not impulsive, approach to skincare and treatments.
Pregnancy represents one of the most hormonally dynamic periods of a woman’s life. Estrogen, progesterone, and melanocyte-stimulating hormone increase significantly, leading to increased vascularity, pigment activity, and immune changes in the skin.
Clinically, this often presents as increased pigmentation, such as melasma, increased redness from vascular changes, acne or congestion due to hormonal fluctuations, visible vessels, heightened sensitivity, and more reactive skin.
During pregnancy, the best we can do is focus on supporting and protecting the skin rather than correcting it. Many active ingredients, such as retinol, are avoided, as are injectables and laser treatments. Supportive treatments, such as facials, and the use of SPF are encouraged.
Following delivery, estrogen levels rapidly decline. During this time, many women notice increased dryness, barrier disruption, dullness, persistent pigmentation and increased inflammation. Skin may also feel thinner or more fragile. From a physiological standpoint, this reflects increased transepidermal water loss and reduced collagen stimulation as estrogen levels fall.
Postpartum is where we begin thinking about restoring skin function before moving toward correction. After pregnancy and delivery, the skin is often in a compromised state due to hormonal withdrawal, inflammation, physiologic stress and of course, sleep disruption. During this time, the skin barrier is often weaker, hydration levels are reduced, and inflammatory pathways may remain elevated.
For this reason, my clinical approach is to first focus on rebuilding skin strength. This means prioritizing hydration, restoring barrier integrity, calming inflammation and improving circulation before introducing more corrective treatments.
Nurse Jacklyn's focus is always on treatments proven to support long-term skin health. Broadband Light (BBL) is one of the most advanced technologies available today, offering much more than surface-level improvements. It works by delivering precise pulses of light energy deep into the skin, targeting pigmentation, redness, and remodel collagen.

What makes this treatment truly remarkable is its ability to stimulate the skin at the cellular level. Research shows that BBL can influence the expression of genes associated with aging, helping the skin function more like youthful, healthy tissue over time.
During treatment, BroadBand Light gently heats the upper layers of the skin and delivers infrared light into the deeper layers. This process encourages the body to naturally renew itself, repairing sun damage and supporting the production of new collagen. By addressing both visible concerns and underlying cellular function, BBL delivers results that are noticeable right away and continue to improve over time.
If pregnancy represents a hormone surge, perimenopause represents hormonal instability, and menopause represents sustained hormone decline. Unlike pregnancy, where hormones rise predictably, perimenopause is characterized by fluctuating estrogen levels that can make the skin behave unpredictably before the more consistent decline seen in menopause.
Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining many of the structural and functional components of healthy skin. It supports collagen production, helps maintain dermal thickness, improves hydration by supporting hyaluronic acid production, enhances elasticity through its effects on elastin fibres, supports wound healing, and helps maintain barrier integrity. Estrogen also plays an important role in regulating inflammation and maintaining adequate circulation within the skin.
As estrogen declines, these supportive mechanisms begin to slow. Fibroblast activity decreases, collagen production is reduced, and existing collagen fibres begin to break down more rapidly than they are replaced. Research suggests that women may lose approximately 30% of their collagen in the first five years after menopause, followed by a gradual decline thereafter.

Structurally, this is when we begin supporting the extracellular matrix more intentionally. Treatment strategies often shift toward improving skin quality through hydration and barrier support while also incorporating treatments that stimulate collagen production and help restore structural integrity. This allows us to not only improve how the skin looks, but also how it functions and responds over time.
In my clinical practice, I typically focus on three foundational treatments when supporting postpartum and menopausal skin. My approach is always to first improve skin quality by restoring hydration, strengthening the barrier and reducing inflammation, followed by treatments that help rebuild collagen and structural support. By prioritizing skin health first, we can improve resilience, optimize treatment outcomes and achieve more natural, long-term results.
ClearSilk is always a treatment I recommend because it helps improve overall skin quality by gently heating the dermis to stimulate collagen activity, improve circulation and reduce inflammation. This makes it particularly beneficial for hormonally thinning skin that appears dull, fragile or reactive. Patients often notice improvements in their skin complexion, texture and tone with a series of treatments. Learn more...
Skin boosters are another excellent treatment for skin integrity, particularly for addressing dehydration, crepey texture and loss of dermal support. Unlike traditional dermal fillers, which are designed to create structure or volume, skin boosters are placed more superficially to improve hydration, elasticity, and overall skin quality. Sculptra injections rebuild the framework supporting the skin. It works by stimulating natural collagen production, helping improve skin thickness, firmness and structural support. I often describe Sculptra to patients as fertilizer for the skin because it gradually and naturally rebuilds the dermal foundation, improving skin strength and replenishing the superficial adipose tissue we lose during these hormonal transitions. I am very excited to announce the launch of Mystro Revive, one of the newest innovations from skinbetter science, developed to support skin undergoing perimenopausal and menopausal change
Key clinical benefits include improving the appearance of crepey skin, fine lines, wrinkles and dehydration, while supporting hydration, barrier function, laxity, and even the itchiness many women experience during hormonal transition.
Mystro Revive is powered by the P.A.T.H (13) Biotechnology, a proprietary blend of 13 plant-based adaptogens designed to support the skin’s natural ability to adapt to stress and maintain physiologic balance. It also incorporates T.A.P biotechnology, a proprietary antioxidant technology that supports the skin’s natural renewal cycle and helps defend against oxidative stress.

This topic feels especially meaningful to me right now because I am currently one month postpartum while also entering my 40s, which means I am personally experiencing both postpartum decline in estrogen and a gradual decline in collagen.
Postpartum skin really teaches patience. It reminds you that healing takes time, that inflammation needs to be calmed before correction, and that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply support the skin rather than push it.
Right now, I am focusing on supporting my skin barrier, protecting it daily with proper hydration and slowly reintroducing retinol as my skin regains its strength. I am also beginning to thoughtfully incorporate laser treatments such as ClearSilk back into my routine, respecting that my skin is still in a transition and recovery phase.
Healthy skin is not about chasing youth — it is about supporting your skin through every stage of life with intention.
Thank you for sharing this journey with me,
Nurse JacklynBBL has been clinically proven to reduce brown spots, age spots, and freckles caused by sun exposure. It helps calm redness, rosacea, and broken capillaries, while refining skin tone and texture for a clearer, brighter complexion. Many patients notice a more even, luminous appearance within days, while ongoing treatments help maintain firmness and resilience as the skin continues to renew itself from within.
According to a study published in PubMed Central, just three BBL sessions produced visible improvements in wrinkles and pigmentation, with tissue samples showing stronger collagen and evidence of true skin repair.

BBL (BroadBand Light) Indications Include:
Most patients begin with a series of three to four treatments, spaced about one month apart, to achieve optimal results. Once skin health is restored, a maintenance treatment, once or twice a year, helps protect and preserve those results.
Downtime is minimal — the skin may appear slightly red immediately after, similar to a mild sunburn, and pigmentation often darkens temporarily before gently sloughing away within a week. This makes BBL a treatment that is both effective and easy to integrate into your lifestyle.
Nurse Jacklyn, a Canadian Key Opinion Leader and National Educator for Sciton Lasers, is highly trusted for her expertise and 18 years of experience with BBL. She recommends BBL as a safe and effective way to refresh and rejuvenate the skin.
“My philosophy has always been to blend the art of beauty with the science of skin health. BBLis one of the cornerstone technologies I recommend because of its proven ability to restore and maintain youthful skin over time. On its own, BBL provides powerful results, but it can also be combined with other treatments, such as ClearSilk or Halo laser, for even greater rejuvenation. My goal is always to create a personalized plan that addresses your unique concerns while promoting your long-term skin health.”
BBL laser treatments refresh and rejuvenate the skin, and the right skincare can help you maximize and maintain those results. Here are three of Nurse Jacklyn’s top product picks to help maintain a brighter, calmer, and clearer complexion after BBL treatment.
